Municipal Buildings & Facilities Subcommittee Meeting: Thursday December 6, 2007 at 6 pm at GF City Hall Room A 101

Meeting Summary of Subcommittee Ideas:

The City hasn’t adopted the International Energy Code, although the subcommittee members felt that it would be beneficial to look at where the city is in relation to the International Code and consider recommendations that would allow us to take small steps toward meeting the requirements of the International code. Kevin Storstad will review and provide information at the group’s second meeting in Jan. (17th)

The subcommittee also felt it was important to consider a recommendation on reducing energy loss and there might be a list of different options on how to accomplish this, and the subcommittee could develop a list of options such as requiring high efficiency insulation or increasing the current R factor in city code.

The Subcommittee felt the City should consider a tabulation of LEED credits for each city building that is either under new construction or in the process of a retrofit, not that there would be a requirement for LEED certification but an understanding and possibly public display of what has been done to make these buildings energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

Another idea included requiring the use comprehensive procurement guidelines if federal or state or tax payer dollars are used in construction as this is required when using federal funds. This isn’t quire the same as LEED certification but does require environmentally friendly actions.

The subcommittee also felt it was important to consider the idea of wind energy at public facilities, this is an idea for the Wastewater Treatment Plant although no one is aware of Nodak or Xcel’s long term plans for alternative energy options and feel this is an important component. The City is however working with the EERC on designating the use of a piece of city property for a wind turbine learning area.
