MAYOR’S CABINET ON YOUNG PEOPLE
Wednesday, January 9, 2008 – 3:00 p.m.
A101

Present: Mayor Brown, Pete Haga, Sharyl Simeone, Deb Thompson, John Packett, Mary Lien, Ashley Lawson, Mark Rath, Amanda Koisor, Betty Otteson, Lisa Burger, Bishop Cole.

I. Welcome and Introductions.

Mayor Brown welcomed everyone and roll call was taken.

II. It’s Not O.K. Campaign

Mayor Brown stated that there is a problem in our community of underage drinking and that a campaign, “It’s Not O.K.”, is being developed. He continued that there are a number of groups in town that recognize the problem and are committed to working together to fix it.

Simeone stated that she has been meeting with different interested groups to coordinate the program and has a lot of information in draft format and are working hard to finalize the program. There will be a kickoff next week and more information will be coming out to the Cabinet and the rest of the community once that date and time are set.

III. Community Report Card on Youth

Haga stated that Ashley Lawson, a former intern in the Public Information Center, is continuing work on this project and thanked those that have been able to provide information or potential sources for information.

Lawson stated that there were 5 benchmarks, each with several data points. She continued that she found several of the datapoints used in the template are items that are not tracked here or from information that can’t be obtained. Her recommendation is to tweak the datapoints for those benchmarks so that they reflect information that is trackable here and could be maintained going forward.

Haga stated that he would e-mail a copy of the latest draft to everyone and encouraged them to submit any suggestions they had for datapoints or sources for information.

IV. Youth Commission

Haga stated that the commission’s next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 16 at 11:30 a.m. in Council Chambers and invited all cabinet members to attend. The Commission has held three meetings so far this year, elected new officers, been asked to offer their opinion on the Forks Area Wellness Center Project, is working on a survey of their own to distribute within schools to get feedback from other students, sent a letter to the movie theaters addressing ticket prices, which has resulted in Bob Moore of the River Cinema requesting to come to the next meeting to discuss how they could work together.
Deb Thompson commented that the youth seem to be very eager to get involved and nice to see their interest.

Mayor Brown commented that the group will be very valuable to the community in the projects that they undertake as well as the uniqueness of being able to use them as a sounding board when opinions from youth are needed.

V. 100 Best Communities Application.

Haga stated that the application was completed and submitted in October and that a response should be coming in the next week or so as to whether we were successful. He stated that we are one of only a handful of cities that have won the award the last two years and hope to again receive it this year. He thanked all that helped in the completion of the application and for the research and information that was supplied.

VI. Other.

Bishop Cole commented that this was his first meeting and wanted to express that he is glad to see the interest the community has for its youth and is excited to become a part of making things even better.

Mark Rath stated that he is planning an organized open house and will make sure to get notice to all the cabinet members so they can attend if interested. He continued that there will be an open time for people to check out the facility and then a scheduled time when information will be given as to the mission and what they do.

Mary Lien expressed thanks and appreciation to Sheryl Simeone for all her work on the projects that the cabinet has been involved with.

VII. Next Meeting Date

The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at City Hall.

VIII. Adjournment

Meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
