a) Community Events
i) Energy Expo- contact organizers of Living Green Expo in Twin Cities to see how this is done
(1) Upfront costs may be an issue if renting a facility for
ii) Alternative- have maps distributed at Farmer’s Market for a “Greenwalk”- people can walk around to different green businesses, sites, demonstration areas (ie. Raingarden, prairie garden, wind energy site of EERC)
(1) Highlight businesses that have sustainable agenda/social component, “green tech”
(2) Need for recycling containers to be part of event
(3) Local organizations to sponsor demonstration areas or sites through food or other support
iii) Home and Garden expo – GF, yearly
(1) This year’s show to have rain barrels – what else could we incorporate?
iv) Business strategies for environmental sustainability – seminar at Stanford – could we do the same at UND?
(1) Seek grants from community partners project
v) Light bulb swap day at Farmer’s Market-
(1) need to seek source for bulbs
(2) Distribute stickers that indicate how much CO2 emissions are being reduced by the person using one fluorescent light bulb instead of incandescent
2) Activism Now- focus on empowering people, not scare tactics- what can we do to make our city a better place
a) Green living pamphlets – distributed at Post Office, GF Welcome Center?
b) Media
i) Weekly column in the GF Herald newspaper – need to have someone approach Pete or Have Melanie PB talk to the Mayor to get this going. Herald contacts: Suzette Biere or Ann Bailey
(1) Need to prepare an example article to show what column would consist of
ii) Television – Channel 8- Talk to Cassie Walder (in charge of content) to see if we could get weekly spot. Perhaps do in conjunction with Terry Dullum? WCCO in the Twin Cities has already been doing this – see for example.
(1) Have Terry Dullum showcase an energy audit or follow someone around in the duration of a day to document what affects their carbon footprint
iii) Mayor’s outlet – could we have the Mayor do a weekly update in a local newspaper, or on TV, or a radio station on What’s Going on with Green in Grand Forks? (or some other catchy title)
iv) TV – human interest stories about people living green (ie composting, using bicycles for transportation)
v) Website- through city – Green Resource Center
(1) Simple tips for homeowners
vi) Green directory for Grand Forks
c) Local classrooms
i) Need to connect with those involved with curriculum
(1) Globe – program on hydrology and soil studies
ii) Contacts: Vince Ames – former Science Teacher from Central; Laura Munsky – Dakota Science Center
iii) Have local school do a green challenge or create a video about sustainability
d) City and County Wellness Program
i) Fitness Fridays – ride bike to work or walk to work – walk breaks
ii) Public health – sponsor pedometer giveaway
3) Policies
a) Direct policy ideas to the appropriate subcommittees
i) Stormwater Credits for homeowners who install raingardens
ii) Recycling committee- City special events mandatory use of recycling containers
4) Other
a) Subcommittee to act as PR hub for other groups
b) Working towards…education & social political transformation of our lives
5) For next meeting –-“ TO DO LIST”
a) Identify and refine broad goals/educational opportunities to proceed with- come up with some more on your own, in addition to those determined in the meeting
b) Identify specific tasks people are willing to get involved with now
c) Identify ideas that can be implemented later - addressed by the Mayor or City staff
