Report on City Council Report
Kaitlin and Pete gave a recap of what was presented to City Council. They were also recognized for being ambassadors of the Youth Commission to meet with Mrs. Dalrymple when she was in town recently.
Twining brought a sample poster to share. Several other students had interest, but did not bring anything today. Red River had a suggestion from a non-YORS member to add on to the poster a question about being a youth voice in the community. Students will continue to work on designs and turn in at the YORS meeting at their school in May.
All expressed an interest in continuing to meet in the summer.
One summer meeting opportunity will be the joint meeting with the Lakota Youth Commission in Lakota mid-June when they have their event. Pete said there is the possibility of using a City vehicle and would be good to have at least 7-10 attend. He asked that students check their schedules and RSVP at their school YORS meetings.
The group discussed other potential times to get together. Decision was made to not meet in July, but to meet twice in August. The first meeting will be August 9 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in Riverside Park. There will be a cookout and the main agenda for the meeting will be to finalize plans for the “Recruitment Party” to be held August 28 at 4:00 p.m. also at Riverside Park. The group talked about checking with radio stations and sponsors to help with the event and working on some games and activities for the event.
A suggestion was made to perhaps partner with CVIC and LSS to promote the Safer Tomorrows Grant. Maybe Optimists, Live the Love, Fire and Police Department and get photographer for the event. The group discussed that if we are looking for sponsors should develop an information letter to use for solicitation. If we could get a draft done then could discuss it in June when we meet to go to the Lakota event.
Another suggestion was to look for grant opportunities that could support some of the event ideas that the group has. Haga recommended that the group concentrate more on raising funds to support specific things and not just to raise money. A suggestion was made to maybe look at doing a car wash or something to just get a starting balance to work with.
2011-2012 Youth Commission Membership
The consensus of the group was that once you get on the commission you should have the ability to stay involved/. Problems come with transition from middle school to high school and keeping even representation. Vote was taken and consensus was if you are elected on in middle school you stay on for rest of middle school. When you move from 8
grade to high school, people from Youth Commission from last year and new freshman all become part of YORS. YORS will elect 2 seats from each school – 1 incumbent from those who have served in the past and 1 seat from anyone nominated. Schools could also choose to elect an alternate commissioner to fill in when needed. Upon call for the vote, motion carried unanimously.
Texting while driving program could be brought into the drivers education program offered through the school district. Kaitlin is willing to work with the Drivers Ed program to develop and deliver this program this summer.
Meeting adjourned at 1:00.
