Committee Minutes
GGGGF Transportation Committee Notes
Tuesday Dec 11, 2007

Bornemann, Elliot Smith, Earl Haugen
We talked mostly about public transportation and esp. the bus system.
Buses are heavily subsidized (85%). DP asked why, then, we don’t just
make them free to encourage ridership? Talked about other ways to get
more people on the buses but no one seemed terribly optimistic.
What about decreasing the amount of fuel we use? Buying more expensive
buses is one option, but they cost 60% more than conventional buses.
Maybe we should consider getting one to see how it works out? City has
tried alternative fuels with mixed results. Does not seem to be much
money to be saved, nor would switching fuels sig. decrease carbon emissions.
Why does UND have its own bus system?
Next meeting we should consider nature of the city fleet, getting more
people to walk and ride bicycles. Also need to start to figure out what
a reasonable set of goals is, and outline some ways to get there.
Next meeting will not be until after the Holidays.
