Committee Minutes

MINUTES - Public Safety Committee - June 1, 1998 - 6:00 p.m.

Members present: Sande, Beyer, Glassheim.

It was noted that the problem of the sewer line for the police building has been solved, (problem not ours but the company's.)

1. Matter of substandard buildings, blighted structures and public health hazards/threats.
It was noted that the mayor office has asked their committee to consider matter of itemizing substandard buildings, had problems getting health, inspections departments looking at buildings. Mr. Swanson stated he wasn't sure what legal problems (fire department determine violation of fire code, inspections determine basis for building code, etc.) and health department has to make determination that homes not cleaned up; noted that odor can be basis for public nuisance - someone has to make inspection (that warrants intrusion into home), need response by owner, and document what finding. Bev Collings, inspections, reported they have written several but they don't respond. After consideration it was moved that the health department meet with fire and inspection departments, draft a letter to potential property owners and notify by mail asking for access to their property. Motion carried.

The meeting was adjourned.
