“Soul of the Community”
Barry Wilfhart from the Chamber, Kristi Mishler of the Community Foundation and Joyce……. gave a brief description of a program being sponsored by The Knight Foundation aimed at improving things in their communities for youth. The students viewed a short video on the “Soul of the Community” project after which they were asked to answer 2 questions to assist them in their project which is geared to improving the community for youth. The questions were: “What are the greatest areas of concern for youth?” and “What would you like us to provide for you?”. Students will think about this and be ready to discuss the issue at their next meeting.

GradNation Presentation/Bully Movie
The group received information on the GradNation Summit and the film “Bully” which has been produced and will be airing in theatres soon. The focus of the GradNation movement is to increase the graduation rate to 90% by 2020. The group discussed the impact that bullying can have on whether some students stay in school or choose to drop out. The movie “Bully” is currently rated “R” which means that many students will not be able to see it without attending with a parent. There is a national movement to get the rating changed to PG-13 so that more students can view it. The movie would be good for students and parents to both see and could lead to good discussion within families about bullying which could be helpful to those being bullied and to those doing the bullying. When the movie gets to Grand Forks more information will be provided and possibly looking at a time in with other events or through the school to help promote viewing.

Cyberbullying Videos Work Session
Students broke into two groups to work on the video storyline for the high school and middle school videos for the remainder of the meeting time. Staff was available to assist them with technical planning. Goal for the day was for each group to finalize their story, scene needs, prop list and casting so that they could be ready to shoot the video by the next meeting.

Meeting adjourned at 1:00.
