Red River Valley Community Action
– Kevin Severson
1406 Linden Court, built 1948 – No architectural survey has been done in this area. It is one block south of the Near Southside Historic District and shows little to no potential for listing individually or as part of a district.
Motion:
to concur that no historic properties are affected by the proposed work on this property. (Slater Jelliff)
Motion carries.
Chair Report
– Marsha Gunderson
MPO Downtown Plan – Gunderson and O’Leary have served on separate committees reviewing the plan, which has just received preliminary approval from City Council. The plan emphasizes development areas and types, makes recommendations regarding traffic flow and parking, and suggests uses for existing underutilized buildings in the downtown area. It’s available for viewing on the MPO web site.
Coordinator Report
– Peg O’Leary
CLG Budget – The SHSND has approved our budget to include two nomination projects. The Commission must choose two of the three we proposed: a) B’nai Israel Synagogue and Montefiore Cemetery, b) Stone Structures at Calvary Cemetery and Memorial Park Cemetery, and c) the Kegs Drive-In. Budget reviewers at the State also questioned the eligibility of the Kegs. It was suggested that the Commission survey the Kegs property this year and request funding to nominate the Synagogue/Cemetery and the Stone Structures in this budget.
Motion:
to request that the funding be used to nominate the B’nai Israel Synagogue and Montefiore Cemetery, and to nominate the Stone Structures at Calvary Cemetery and Memorial Park Cemetery. (Jelliff, Sickels)
Motion carries.
UND Nomination – The NPS reviewer requests more information on the houses included in the area north of University Avenue. Their role within the University should be further explained or they should be listed as non-contributing properties. She also requests further explanation for the inclusion of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house, stating that it was built in 1965 (the last year of the significant period) and is not Collegiate Gothic architecture. Commissioners agreed to exclude the privately owned houses within the district, even if they date to the historic period. Commissioners do feel that the Lambda Chi house should be included as contributing due to its representation of the strength of the Greek system on campus in the 1960s. The fact that new Greek houses were being built at this time is significant. They request that the author make the best case she can for inclusion.
Society of Professional Surveyors – The presentation went well.
1019 Reeves Drive – This house was overlooked in the Near Southside Historic District nomination. O’Leary is working with Lorna Meidinger to amend the District nomination to include this contributing property. The house, built in 1922 in a hipped roof Bungalow style with strong Prairie style influences, retains architectural integrity. Members agreed to the nomination and a Public Hearing will be held at the next meeting. The owners have been notified of our intent to nominate; they have not denied permission.
Riverside Historic District Plaque Placement – O’Leary visited the area with Mike Yavarow; two possible sites are recommended: the plaque can be attached to the flood wall just east of the opening on 1
st
Ave. N., or the plaque can be free-standing (as the Near Southside plaques are) and placed 20’ from the flood wall in the same area. O’Leary recommended the free-standing style as being more prominent when one is on-site. Commissioners agreed and O’Leary will finalize the purchase.
Motion:
to adjourn. (Sickels, Flemmer)
Motion carries.
Meeting adjourned.
8:00 p.m.
The next regular meeting will be at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 14, 2009, room A101, City Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Peg O’Leary
