Grand Forks City Employees
Doing Their Part

Greg Batzer, Operations Supervisor at the Grand Forks Water Treatment Plant, decided to start riding his bike to work a few years ago when gas prices went up to $3/gallon and he has been doing that most of the time since then. He commutes to and form work on his bike year round with the only exceptions being heavy rain and snow covered streets. When the streets are clear though, a studded bike tire keeps him riding even on ice during the winter. In good weather he sometimes adds some extra distance to his commute just to get a little more time on his bicycle. At work and at home, Greg leads by example by recycling everything he can and he saves energy at home by having a well insulated home and using a programmable thermostat. Greg says having grandchildren is one of his inspirations to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.

Peggy Kurtz
Peggy Kurtz, Community Development Program Compliance Officer, loves her new windows. Peggy was one of several City employees who decided to improve the energy efficiency of her home starting with getting an energy audit. Peggy said she learned more about how her home uses energy and that new windows would help her save energy and money. Peggy and her husband Dan can now look out of their new high efficiency windows in rural Grand Forks and watch the wildlife from the comfort of their home. And the windows were manufactured regionally adding to the sustainability of their home energy efficiency project.

Kelly Bowlin

Sherrie Lequire
Kelly Bowlin and Sherrie Lequire both work for the Grand Forks Housing Authority and both have been described as "super-recyclers" by their colleagues at Urban Development. Kelly and Sherrie take full advantage of the paper, plastic and can recycling containers at Urban Development being careful to recycle anything and everything that can be recycled. Colleagues say that Kelly and Sherrie serve as examples to them and the thought of Kelly or Sherrie "catching" them throwing away something that could be recycled is enough to keep them on the recycling path! Like all City residents, Kelly and Sherrie have to carry their home recycling containers to the curb, but curb recycling pick up makes recycling easier for them. Keep in mind that not all cities have curb recycling pick up. "Super-Recyclers" Kelly and Sherrie are sustainability examples to us all.
