Recycling Containers

Proposed Recycling Changes for Grand Forks, ND

Current as of June 21, 2013

The City of Grand Forks is working to enhance its current curb-side recycling program. Considerable discussion has taken place throughout Grand Forks as to how this would work and what it would mean to residents. Since the project is yet to be bid, many questions are difficult to answer, but this is what we can tell you at this time:

The plan would give residents larger, wheeled containers (complete with lids) that would replace the plastic crates currently being used. The new 90-gallon containers would be only slightly larger than the 3 crates, stacked on top of one another.
What is yet to be determined is where the recycling containers would be picked up – whether the current curb-side pickup would be maintained, or if alley pickup would be allowed.

The City has already heard from many residents who are anxious to receive their new recycling container and begin the new program. Those people need do nothing – the new containers will be delivered when the updated program gets underway in the Fall of 2013.

Ultimately, the City intends to implement a Pay-As-You-Throw program in 2014, where residents are billed according the amount of trash they generate. The new 90-gallon recycling container will allow most residents to increase the amount they recycle and reduce their total trash quantities, to keep their monthly utility cost from increasing.

The City will make every effort to keep residents informed of the process involved with these recommended changes to the City’s recycling program.
