PROCEEDINGS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF GRAND FORKS, NORTH DAKOTA
December 10, 2001

The City Council of the City of Grand Forks, North Dakota met in special session in the Council Chambers in City Hall on Monday, December 10, 2001, during the Committee of the Whole meeting with President Gershman presiding. President Gershman called the City Council to order.
RESOLUTION OF THE GRAND FORKS CITY COUNCIL RECOGNIZING THE EXEMPLARY PERFORMANCE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA 2001 FOOTBALL TEAM

Mr. Schmisek read the resolution as follows:

WHEREAS, the University of North Dakota Football team defeated Grand Valley State 17 to 14 on December 8, 2001 for the NCAA Division II Championship; and

WHEREAS, this is the first NCAA Division II Football Championship EVER for in UND Football history; and

WHEREAS, the UND Football team posted an amazing record of 14-1 overall in the 2001 season; and

WHEREAS, the Football players chose to never give up and demonstrated true sportsmanship that is an inspiration and a goal for every athlete and team; and

WHEREAS, UND place-kicker Cameron Peterka, was named to the 25-player American Coaches Association Division II All-America team and 8 UND players were named to the Daktronics Division II All-Midwest Region Football Team; and

WHEREAS, the UND football team drew over 100,000 fans to their home games to experience the glory of their season; and

WHEREAS, the UND football team excelled off the field as well as on the field and produced 12 of the 28 members of the 2001 NCC All-Academic Football team and Mac Schneider was named to the 2001 Verizon College Division Academic All-District VII First Team; and

WHEREAS, Head Coach Dale Lennon was named the AFCA Division II Regional of the Year and the 2001 North Central Conference Coach of the Year;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE GRAND FORKS CITY COUNCIL RECOGNIZES DECEMBER 2001 AS “UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA FIGHTING SIOUX FOOTBALL MONTH” AND THAT THE UND 2001 FOOTBALL TEAM’S ON AND OFF-THE-FIELD PERFORMANCE EXEMPLIFIES NOBLE CHARACTER AND A HARD WORK-ETHIC THAT SERVES AS INSPIRATION AND A SOURCE OF PRIDE FOR THE UNIVERSITY, THE CITY AND ALL THEY REPRESENT.

Adopted this 10th day of December, 2001.

Council Members Brooks and Kreun moved to adopt the resolution. Upon call for the question of adoption, and upon voice vote, the following voted “aye”: Council Members Gershman, Glassheim, Burke, Hamerlik, Bjerke, Brooks, Kreun, Bakken, Kerian, Klave and Christensen – 11; voting “nay”: None. Absent: Council Members Stevens, Martinson and Lunak - 3.

Mr. Duquette announced that this resolution will be read live to the team at the Alerus tonight. President Gershman read a letter from Mayor Brown. Council Members Brooks and Hamerlik moved to adjourn as City Council to reconvene as Committee of the Whole. Motion carried unanimously.
