The Grand Forks Police Dept. Special Purpose Vehicle Program consists of approximately 30 officers from the department who are trained in the operation of ATV’s and snowmobiles. In the future, all officers within the patrol division of the department will be trained. The Special Purpose Vehicles are used to patrol the city trails and Greenway along with deployment to City events and gatherings; the special purpose vehicles would also be deployed in times of emergencies. The SPV Coordinator is Sgt. Mark Ellingson who is responsible for overseeing the program along with providing required maintenance to these vehicles.

    Snowmobile Patrol

The Snowmobile Patrol is part of the Grand Forks Police Department Special Purpose Vehicle Program. For December of 2009 and the beginning of the 2010 season the snowmobiles were not utilized because of vehicle changeover. The Department has retired the two 1991 Polaris snowmobiles as well as the 1997 Polaris snowmobile. The Department has purchased two 2010 Ski-Doo snowmobiles as their replacements; these snowmobiles are now operational. See below for more pictures of the new snowmobiles.

The Grand Forks Police Department looks forward to deploying these new additions in the 2010-2011 winter season.
