Recreational Fires
Recreational fires do not require a permit; but, those individuals having recreational fires must comply with the following:
1) The fire must be small in size:
a) The fuel pile must be 3 feet of less in diameter.
b) The fuel pile must be 2 feet or less in height.
2) The fire must be away from structures or combustibles:
a) 25 feet or more away.
b) 15 feet or more away in an approved container (purchases fire ring, etc.).
c) A deck is a structure and it may or may not be combustible depending on the material it is constructed from. The typical wood deck is combustible.
3) The fire must be constantly attended:
a) A responsible individual must be present from the time the fire is lit until it is extinguished
b) An extinguisher ( minimum 4-A rating) or other approved extinguishing equipment. (dirt, sand, water barrel, garden hose, water tank, etc.).
c) extinguishing equipment must be immediately available.
4) The fire must not be offensive, objectionable, or hazardous:
a) Smoke, odor, or other by-products of combustion that are found to be offensive, objectionable, or hazardous, can be ordered to be extinguished by the fire department.
b) Litter, trash, or garbage (including yard waste) will not be burned as part of a recreational fire. (no leaves, no paper, no grass clippings, etc.).
5) Fire will be extinguished or ordered to be extinguished if:
a) Irresponsible burning is taking place (unattended fire, or burning of trash or debris, etc.).
b) The fire endangers the safety, health, or welfare or occupants of nearby property.
c) The fire endangers the safety, health, or welfare of the general public.
