Emergency Preparedness

Grand Forks Public Health works with the North Dakota Department of Health, public safety agencies, and other community groups to plan and prepare for disasters or emergency situations. This is in conjunction with local all hazards emergency planning, preparedness and response.

Grand Forks Public Health is part of a five county region established by the State of North Dakota for emergency preparedness and response planning. Counties included in our region are: Grand Forks, Griggs, Nelson, Pembina and Walsh.

An emergency response coordinator, environmental health practitioner, and a public information officer serve the five counties within the Northeast Region. Their work is funded in part by federal grants and is focused on public health emergencies. This is done through public education and planning which involves partnerships for enhanced regional response plans and capabilities.

Health Department Readiness

Taking action to protect the health of the public in any emergency requires that your Health Department be well prepared to respond to a wide range of threats. Key elements of public health preparedness include:

  • Planning and regular exercising of those plans
  • Capacity to detect and identify health threats early
  • Timely access to information
  • Reliable communication systems
  • Vital partnerships among responding agencies and organizations
  • Clear knowledge of individual and agency roles and responsibilities

Code Red

Emergency Mass Notification System

Grand Forks, Griggs, Nelson, Pembina and Walsh counties have contracted with Emergency Communications Network to license its CodeRED high-speed emergency notification system. This system has the ability to deliver messages to a live person or an answering machine within a targeted area or the entire county quickly.
