Smoke Free and Vape Free Laws

State and local smoke free laws play a vital role in protecting community health by reducing exposure to secondhand cigarette smoke and secondhand vaping aerosols in public places and workplaces. These laws not only safeguard non-users from the proven risks of secondhand smoke and vaping aerosols but also help create healthier environments that support people trying to quit.

Except as otherwise stated in state or local law, smoking and vaping are prohibited in all:

  • Public places and places of employment
  • Work-related vehicles
  • Indoor and outdoor areas of restaurants and bars
  • Areas within twenty (20) feet of any entrance, exit, operable window, air intake and ventilation systems of enclosed areas in which smoking is prohibited.

Grand Forks Smoke/Vape Free Ordinance (within GF city limits)

ND State Smoke/Vape Free Law (all other areas in GF County)

Law violations can be reported here or by contacting GF Public Health at 701-787-8100.

Smoke Free and Vape Free Signage Requirements

Both North Dakota law and the City of Grand Forks ordinance require businesses and public places to post clear and visible “no smoking” signs or symbol at all entrances. Businesses can post their own signage or request free signage from GF Public Health.

GF Public Health has refreshed the local signage to clearly communicate that Grand Forks is both smoke free and vape free, while also featuring a community-branded look.
