Step One -- Application
- The first step in the Dispatching Profession is reviewing all information in the hiring packet, and completing, and turning in the application information.
Step Two -- Dispatching Skill Assessment
- All applicants must complete the Skills Assessment, which is a computer-based test, divided into several sections, each evaluating a specific skill. This test is designed to measure the ability to perform Public Safety Dispatcher work such as data entry, multi-tasking, map reading, memory recall, and prioritizing.
- Candidates are required to demonstrate their ability to both multi-task and make accurate choices, and must receive a passing score for both data entry and non-data entry portions of the assessment.
Step Three -- Compatibility Assessment
- All applicants that have passed the Dispatching Skills Assessment Test will then be required to complete the Grand Forks PSAP Compatibility Assessment, which is a computer based assessment, divided into several sections, each evaluating a specific quality and trait. This assessment is designed to measure the ability of performing Public Safety Dispatcher work such reliability, resilience, composure, task management, confident, assertive, dependability. This assessment will be sent through email to those that have successfully passed the Skills test.
Step Four -- Panel Interview
- Successful candidates will be invited to an oral interview, which are typically conducted by a 4 person panel. The panel may consist of staff from the Grand Forks PSAP including the Director, Center Manager, Training Coordinator, Team Leader, and a representative from the Human Resource Department.
Step Five -- Post-Offer Background Investigation
- Post-Offer/Pre-employment, candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation as a condition of hiring including:
- Fingerprinting for Federal, State, and Local Criminal Records Check
- Local and State driving records
- All Contact with law enforcement and local records checks
- Legal system and judgements
- Personal and Employment Reference checks
- Pre-Employment Drug Screening
