Learn MoreWhat Can Residents Do During Snow Removal
How Residents Can Help:
- Keep Streets Clear:
- Remove Vehicles: Leave vehicles off the streets until plows have passed to allow for efficient snow removal. Vehicles may be towed if left on the street.
- Travel Only When Necessary: Limit travel to essential trips.
- Drive Safely: Slow down, allow extra travel time, and maintain at least 100 feet of distance behind snow removal equipment.
- Sidewalk Snow and Ice Removal:
- Requirement: Residents must clear sidewalks of snow and ice within 24 hours after snowfall ends. Failure to do so may result in the City removing the snow at the owner's expense, with the cost billed to the monthly utility bill.
- City Ordinance:
- 16-0301. Snow and Ice—Removal from Sidewalks: Owners or occupants must keep sidewalks and approach walks adjacent to their property free from snow and ice. The City may remove snow if not cleared within 24 hours, with costs assessed to the property owner. No removal is required during an ongoing snowstorm.
- Snow Disposal Guidelines:
- Do Not Deposit Snow on Streets or Sidewalks:
- City Ordinance 16-0317: It is illegal to deposit snow or ice on city streets, sidewalks, or public property. This includes snow from driveways, parking lots, or private property. Violations may result in fines.
- Avoid Traffic Hazards: Do not deposit snow near intersections, fire hydrants, traffic signals, or public transportation loading areas.
- Efficient Snow Clearing:
- Wait for Plows: If possible, wait until the street has been plowed before clearing the end of your driveway. Plowing often deposits snow back into driveways, and the Streets Department cannot return to clear these areas.
- Protect Property:
- Mailboxes: Ensure your mailbox is set back from the road and is mounted at least 43" high. Consider adding reflectors and checking for deterioration to reduce the risk of damage from plowed snow.
- Plow Truck Observations:
- Plows Up: Don’t be alarmed if plow trucks are driving with plows up; they may be refueling, undergoing repairs, or headed to another area.
- Be Patient:
- Snow Removal is Extensive: The City clears approximately 625 centerline miles of road, 40 miles of alley, and 40 miles of bike paths. This is a time-consuming and challenging task that we strive to complete safely and efficiently.
