Schedule Your Water Meter Replacement
The Grand Forks Water Department is replacing water meters at no cost to the homeowner. To complete your installation, an adult must be present and access to the water meter is needed. The replacement process will take less than 30 minutes!
Homes requiring meter replacement were sent a letter requesting a meter replacement. Around 4,500 homes in Grand Forks do not need a meter replacement because they already contain smart meters. If you try to schedule an appointment on the Keystone website and are unable to, your home already contains a smart meter and is not on the replacement list.
Installation appointments will be offered from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday – Friday, and evenings or Saturdays upon request.
Please follow these instructions before scheduling your appointment:
- Check both valves that are located before and after the water meter to make sure they are operating correctly by shutting down the flow of water.
- If either of your valves are leaking, or if the valves are in rough condition, please make sure to have them repaired before scheduling your appointment.

For residents concerned about potential fire hazards regarding the smart meter, the electrical portion of the new smart meters and transmitters are potted which makes them completely waterproof and designed to function underwater indefinitely. Potting is the process of filling an electronic component with a compound that protects the unit from moisture, dust, and other contaminants. Potting is a widely used method for protecting electrical devices, and the use of this method ensures the new smart meters are completely water proof.
